You will have heard it a thousand times, we train the owner.
Usually when to give a treat as a reward for something is usually the extent of the training.
]Not a huge benefit in the real world and every day life.
On our group session this morning, I asked a client with her dog to step back when another dog looked at hers.
I asked her if she knew why I had asked this of her, she did not.
I asked her if she had spotted the intensity of the stare coming from another dog directed towards her dog. She had not, but her dog had.
How often we miss the details like this, our dogs do not though and they are then looking for help and guidance from us to help with the situation.
If that help is not forthcoming and the dog feels left to decide for themselves, we are less and less useful to our dog who will start to make their own decisions quicker because there is no point asking us for help.
So you know those owners you see out with their dog, either on the phone or with ear pods in, steer clear because they are not observing any communication from their dog and are often in a world of their own.
If you want your dog to properly trust you, you have to be present, you needs to recognise when you are being asked a question, how to answer in a way your dog will understand and what to do to help your dog make better decisions.
There is a lot going on in all of that, our dogs really want us to be helpful and a good person to be out with, who can cope with tricky situations and energetic dogs who come bounding over, completely out of control.
They can be scary situations and they need to be handled properly.
If all of this, this is just a little bit of how I work, sounds like it would be of interest to you, get in touch with Havers Dog Behaviour for a chat.
There is so much more you can know, there is so much I can help you with so you can have a better, calmer and more trusting relationship with your dog.
